JAZZ, FOLK and CLASSICAL ENSEMBLES

Our jazz, folk and classical ensemble programs provide a progressive series of groups to provide appropriate challenges for students at all levels of ensemble playing. All ensemble students must be taking private lessons. Ensembles provide an opportunity for students to expand their musical growth beyond their private lessons and to share music with their peers. They learn to blend with other instruments, listen to other parts, and apply the concepts of dynamics, phrasing and nuances as a group. Placements in all ensembles will be made based on age, level and readiness as recommended by a student's private teacher in consultation with the school’s directors and ensemble instructors. Regular attendance is required. Students not taking private lessons at JOMP must take a placement audition, so we can determine if we have a group that is a good match..

The tuitions for the academic year are listed for each ensemble.  The divided payment (two payments a year) are listed in parentheses.

Jazz Ensembles

Students will learn to read chord symbols and jazz charts, and develop ear training, ensemble and rhythmic skills. The ensembles will explore jazz as an art form, with a focus on individual improvisation based on scales and harmonic centers, in a small group setting. Students will experience the rich legacy of jazz styles from Blues and standards to Bebop, contemporary, Latin and original compositions. Jazz ensembles will be offered community performance opportunities as well as JOMP recitals.

Frequent community performances give this group the opportunity to share their talent and love of fiddling with others. As with all of our ensembles, it is required that members of Frog Point Fiddlers also be taking private lessons to keep building their skills as classical violinists. An audition with Myra is required of new students interested in joining Frog Point Fiddlers.
