Our Music and Movement curriculum progresses
developmentally as children mature. They will learn a wide variety of songs,
tapping the beat or the rhythm of the words as they sing. Contrasts in
rhythm, tempo, dynamics, timbre and phrasing are explored through movement
and with rhythm instruments. Children learn to hear the form of a song when
the maracas play the A section and the wood blocks play the B section, and
when they all play their rhythm instruments together (tutti) on the chorus
and each one takes a turn playing a solo on the verses. Later, when they are
ready to take instrumental lessons, these internalized concepts will enable
them to learn to read melodic and rhythmic notation, feel phrasing and
understand musical forms much more easily.
