The Joy of Music Program was founded as a program of Music and Movement classes for preschoolers. Music and Movement remains at the heart of our developmental approach to music education. Our current curriculum has grown from them, and many of our teenagers and alumni started their musical journey in these classes. Children naturally tune in to the sounds and actions around them, spontaneously responding to them with their own voices and body movements. The following classes are designed to help nurture these responses by providing our youngest students with a joyful introduction to music making.
The tuitions for the academic year are listed for each class. The divided payment (two payments a year) are listed in parentheses. |

** Music & Movement ~ ages 2 - 4 with parent, grandparent or caregiver ~ (limited to 10 pairs) Instructor: Patti Puracchio-Lahey Tuesday 9:45 - 10:30 Tuition $142/$168 (per session; adult - no charge)
Session 1 ~ (11 weeks) Sept. 23 - December 9 (make-up December 16) Session 2 ~ (13 weeks) February 3 - May 12 (make-up May 19)
This class will utilize creative movement, improvisation, rhythm games and more while encouraging self-expression, interactional skills (with peers and adults) and body awareness. Children are exposed to a variety of musical selections - classical, R&B, jazz, big band, etc. |

Instructor: Patti Purrachio-Lahey Tuesday 10:45 - 11:30 Tuition $142/$168 (per session; adult - no charge) Session 1 (11 wks) and Session 2 (13 wks) ~ same dates as Music & Movement above Introduce your child to the magic and joy of music, movement and song. Move to different kinds of music, play rhythm games, sing and engage in creative play. This class offers a wonderful bonding experience through music and provides an appropriate first exposure to the arts and group process. 1/2 and 5 Instructor: Wendy Ardizzone Wednesday 3:45 - 4:30 Friday 3:45- 4:30 Tuition $140 (per session)
Session 1 ~ (10 classes) Sept.24/ 26 to Dec. 3/5 (make-up Dec 10/12) Session 2 ~ (10 classes) Feb. 25/27 to May 6/8 (make-up May 13/15) This class offers an introduction to the fun of interacting with other children in a small music class (4 to 6 children) without parents or caregivers. Singing, rhythm instruments and movement activities provide a solid foundation for children's musical growth. Each child is made to feel valued as part of a group that listens to each other, shares ideas and materials and enjoys making music together.

Wednesday 4:30 - 5:15 Friday 4:30 - 5:15 Our Music and Movement curriculum progresses developmentally as children mature. They will learn a wide variety of songs, tapping the beat or the rhythm of the words as they sing. Contrasts in rhythm, tempo, dynamics, timbre and phrasing are explored through movement and with rhythm instruments. Children learn to hear the form of a song when the maracas play the A section and the wood blocks play the B section, and when they all play their rhythm instruments together (tutti) on the chorus and each one takes a turn playing a solo on the verses. Later, when they are ready to take instrumental lessons, these internalized concepts will enable them to learn to read melodic and rhythmic notation, feel phrasing and understand musical forms much more easily. |
